Getting Kids Involved with Chores

How to Get Children More Involved in Household Chores – Ask Jen Style!

With the kids back in school, I know that finding extra time for your home search can be so tricky. That’s why I love working with new home buyers to help you find the right community for your family. Sometimes getting your children more involved in household chores is also a great way to find more time in your day. I know for my own family it is important for my children to have a share in the responsibility for keeping our household running smoothly.

One method I use is to take a page from the show Celebrity Apprentice. Each day one of my children is the “project manager” and is responsible for ensuring that all of the task get done correctly. The “project manager” changes, and sometimes on weekends or summer days my children’s friends also get a chance to be the “project manager.” The biggest thing is that I stay out of how to get the chores done – the children have to figure out a way to work together to get the job done.

These are the types of chores that I want my children to help with at home. Sometimes they are compensated for them, but for the most part I believe that the members of the family should work together to make our home work like clockwork.

  • Pooper Scooping the Yard
  • Empty the Dishwasher
  • Vacuuming
  • Picking Up Personal Rooms
  • Walking the Dogs
  • Taking out the Trash

If the project manager gets the team to get the chores done he or she can be voted to stay in the role, or we’ll move another person in the role. Bringing this level of competition to the chores and housekeeping is one way to keep the children interested in completing the full job and also helps me keep my house running.

To keep track I’ve created this handy printable Family Chore Chart for you – and I would love to know how you get your children involved in keeping your home clean.
